Tongabezi Lodge is situated on a sweeping bend of the Zambezi river, facing west toward the sunset and the Victoria Falls National Park, 18 kilometres upstream from Victoria Falls. The lodge has open expansive views of the river and has a wild, romantic feel. You choose between one of the four Houses or one of the six cottages.
The ‘Houses’ are furnished with local materials and designed with romance and indulgence in mind. Dominating each house is the huge, king-size bed. Sweeping views over the Zambezi River are also a feature. Each House is completely open to the front affording superb river views and sounds. Your private balcony overlooking the river is the perfect setting for a romantic dinner under the stars, or you can choose to dine with other guests on one of the river decks. Honeymoon House was the first but it has now been joined by the equally romantic and unique Bird House, Tree House and the slightly unfortunately named Dog House. Great attention has been paid to the bathrooms: a special feature is the huge open-air sunken bath.
Five expansive River Cottages are situated along the river bank. Each has a large double bed or two singles, mosquito net, en-suite bath and shower, and both indoor and outdoor areas for relaxing, dining and enjoying the idyllic river views. Then cottages are not open-fronted. The sixth cottage is a Garden cottage, with a second bedroom, which doubles as a Family suite sleeping four. There is full electricity in all the rooms.
The central public areas are decorated in earthy African style and include an open air bar, sitting area, dining area. However dining is usually outside on one of the river decks. The swimming pool is landscaped into a rock face and there are two grass tennis courts and a croquet lawn. There’s also a secluded sala for massages or private dinners. Inclusive activities at Tongabezi include guided tours to Victoria Falls, canoeing on the Zambezi river, boating to a deserted island for a picnic lunch, private candlelit dinners on a sanpan floating on the Zambezi under the stars, bird walks, river cruises, game drives, and village visits.
TANGALA HOUSE is a large and unique Safari House on the banks of the Zambezi River, 15 km upstream from the magnificent Victoria Falls. Stylishly built and furnished with a recent feature in the UK House and Garden magazine, Tangala sleeps eight and makes an ideal stay for a family holiday, as it comes with its own staff and guide. |

Kate stayed here in September 2006: "Tongabezi Lodge is completely different in style from the River Club. It is wilder, less manicured and more African in feel with open expansive views of the river. You choose between one of the four ‘Houses’ or the six cottages. As with the other lodges, each House is completely open to the front affording superb river views and sounds. I’m sure that Tongabezi has more than its fair share of honeymoon couples and your private balcony overlooking the river is the perfect setting for a romantic dinner. If you prefer have a room which is enclosed at night, then you can opt for one of the cottages, five of which are on the river banks as well.
I found Tongabezi to be a very romantic lodge, perhaps suiting a younger clientele than River Club. Dining at Tongabezi tends not to be communal whereas at River Club it usually is.
As recommended elsewhere, you could combine Tongabezi with Sindabezi Island for a lovely contrast." "
