Hwange National Park lies two hours drive south of Victoria Falls. This is big game country with massive herds of elephants, especially visible at the end of the dry season in September, as well as lion, buffalo, hyena, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest sable, roan and other antelope. The private game lodges are mostly adjacent to the park. Here you take part in early morning and late afternoon game drives in open 4X4 vehicles and game walks.

Lake Kariba was formed when the lower Zambezi was dam-flooded in the late 50’s. The wildlife congregated on the southern shores and Matusadona National Park was created to protect it. Matusadona affords superb game viewing on both land and water, with elephant, buffalo and black rhino roaming in large numbers on the flood plains. The shimmering lake, with its characteristic silhouettes of dead trees, is a paradise for photographers particularly at sunset. You stay in romantic hillside safari lodges, tented camps or even on a houseboat.

Mana Pools National Park lies downstream of Kariba. Here the Zambezi’s flood plain teems with wildlife and the birding is rich and varied. Walking and Canoeing safaris are a speciality of this region. The Mana Pools Canoe Adventure is a fascinating way to get intimate with the mighty river, offering exhilaration and tranquillity by turns. The silent canoe allows you to glide past buffalo and elephant undisturbed by your presence. Game-viewing safaris in two-man canoes range from 3 to 8 days duration. Your guide is supported by welcoming camp attendants. Stay in walk-in tents with mattresses, proper bedding, mosquito nets, bush toilets and showers. Walking Safaris are offered at both Mana Pools and Matusadona. Three or four night trips are led by a highly qualified walking guide, using similar bushcamps described above.. Walking safaris operate from May to October.

Victoria Falls is a sight not to be missed. The clouds of spray generated by this thunderous descent have resulted in a lush rain forest full of stunning wild flowers. A host of activities are centred on three separate delights: the Falls, the magnificent Zambezi River and the surrounding Zambezi National Park.
